Sensory Tools - Autism
My Colton graduated two years ago!
He is my Autistic, rad, amazing, brave, loving boy.
As a single mom of four kids, it was always challenging to find resources to help him through the school years.
As a reminder, be sure to have an IEP in place.
Also, work with the special education teachers and staff to ensure that your child has the best resources to help them succeed and soar!
These are some resources that I used and love!
I love these cups because they fit in backpacks.
Colton would often leave the classroom to walk around (or runaway). Water was always helpful for him. It's a great re-direct.

These pillows are great for home, school, church, doctor's office visits, etc.
You don't even have to have the vibrate on.
Sometimes, it's just about having it with them.
I cannot express enough how important noise cancelling headphones are for kiddos with sensory issues. In the car, at the movies, in the store, at school (think fire alarms, etc.).
You need noise cancelling headphones.

They are quiet "fidget" toys.
They are soothing and calming.
Bouncy Band Wiggle Seat.
These are great for desk chairs.
They are quiet.
They aren't big and bulky.
They can be set on the desk chair or on the floor when working in groups.
When you have a special needs amaze-a-balls kiddo, you learn quickly that the name of the game is re-direction.
This is a small keyring that can fit in a purse, a backpack, a desk cubby...
These little cards are perfect for re-direction.
Weighted blankets and weighted vests are great.
Colton has had a weighted blanket for a long time.
He never took it to school, but used it at home often.
This is a small lap blanket that your child could keep at school, with the teacher's permission.
These are just handy little cards to have around when communication is breaking down!
Many autistic children and adults are non-verbal.
And oh, so awesome!
Cards like this are really helpful to have around.

Sensory Chew Necklaces that look like "normal" necklaces are helpful.
Colton would often chew gum, just to have something in his mouth.
However a lot of teachers are not fond of gum, and I can't blame them!
These necklaces are great for that reason!
The next couple of items are great, but be sure to check with your child's teacher to make sure they are okay with your child having them in the classroom.
Colton was in some mainstream classes, along with his special ed classes.
Some teachers find these resources to be distractions.
However, they are helpful.
Flexible seating - yoga ball.
